Last Lessons #14 – A TIME TO MOURN

A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance. Ecclesiastes 3:4

There may be many in the United States of America who are laughing and dancing today, because they think they have won an election. There are others of us who are weeping and mourning. We are not sad because of a possible loss, we are sad that half the people in our country by their vote have shown that they agree that abortion (murder) is right, that same-sex marriage (homosexuality) is right, and that cancellation (no freedom to speak) is right, and that removing “In God we trust” as our motto is right. We are very sad that half our country voted in hate for a person, not in love for a country and for God who graciously allowed us to live in this country.

So, what will happen to this country? Not being a prophet, I do not know. But there are three possibilities that are apparent even to me:

1. The Lord will punish this country because of its corruption and idolatry. God did this when the Israelites (God’s people) became worldly, corrupt and worshiped other gods. Read 2 Kings 17:7-18. God has every right to punish this country too. We have lost the right to be called a Christian nation and God has not promised us that the USA, as we know it, will be allowed to continue unaffected. Living in a country that is controlled by haters will be harsh punishment. God does have his remnant even in the USA. It’s called the CHURCH. Yet God in love disciplines his own. 1 Peter 4:17.

2. The Lord will return. Many of God’s people see signs of Christ’s return today. We do not know the time when the Lord will come, but we cannot help but wonder if the nations (including the USA) could be any more divided between God’s people and Satan’s people than it is today. The end could be very near. The Scripture tells us that when the Lord does return he will judge the nations. Read Matthew 25:31-46. Those nations that prove their faith in Christ by their actions will inherit the kingdom prepared for them. Those nations that prove that they do not have faith in Christ by their actions will be cast into eternal fire along with the devil.

3. The Lord will bring revival. Our only hope that this country will truly change is if the Spirit of the Lord convicts individuals of corruption and idolatry. When individuals repent (change their minds and their ways) and pray, God in his mercy may bring revival. The last revival in the USA known as the Great Awakening in the 18th century changed the nation. You may want to read about it and the sermon that ignited it by Jonathan Edwards. The sermon was called Sinners in

the Hands of an Angry God. I suggest a book by George Marsden Jonathan Edwards - a life. An audible edition is available free on Amazon.

The USA needs revival if we are to be saved. However, we cannot bring revival, only God causes revival. He does it whenever and however he wills. But we can pray. God answers prayer. I am praying, and I’m asking you to pray too. Pray that God will have mercy on us and give us the only thing that will save our beloved country.

  2. Dear Rosemary,

Your suggestions of what needs to happen in our country are spot on. However, your descriptions of the people who voted out the current administration are misguided and insulting. I am not a "hater," nor are many other Christians who simply could not vote for a man with no moral compass, a derider of those with disabilities, and no competence to even do what he was elected to do. Character does matter and character is more than being anti-abortion (which I am), anti-homosexual, or followers of cancellation. I don't know many people who are. We voted for a devout Catholic and decent human being. Your suggestion that the retired presidents of Fuller, Westminster and Gordon-Conwell are part of the group of haters is folly.
I usually enjoy reading your "Last thoughts" and hope there will be more.

    1. I’m not sure how you can justify voting against a person ( one you do not personally know) based on the supposed persons’ lack of a “moral compass” and vote for a person or party that states its’ clear intent to further erode the moral compass of an entire nation is contradictory. Either your own moral compass is set by your declaration of standing with Christ or you follow other people’s opinions.

  3. I should say that you are making an inference about retired seminary presidents, not a suggestion. Perhaps you did not know about their public statement concerning the election.

  4. Yes, Rosemary, praying for God’s mercy for our country and for our leaders is essential! May God’s people commit to God’s Word admonishing us to do it. So much is at stake! How fragile our country now seems, so different than the one my father and brother served so passionately and honorably. Living in Europe as a child, I was taught by my father to respect and show kindness to those he had fought against, even after his having spent a year in a British hospital recovering from being severely wounded. “They are no longer our enemies,” he would say.
When I chose to vote for our president in 2016, I struggled because of rhetoric that made me wince. However, I believed then as I do now, that when a candidate’s character is questionable, one can also look at who the person draws around himself. A person’s character is also what and who he or she, represents. Actions do speak louder than words. Pro-life policies, Supreme Court justices, criminal justice reform, the ability to work and support a family, and a Herculean effort against the pandemic, do matter. Sanctity of life does include the elderly, no matter how old.
Martin Luther wrote,”In a word, next to the Gospel(ministry) or the spiritual office no better jewel, no greater treasure, no costlier gift, no finer foundation, no more precious possession, exists on earth than a government that administers and upholds justice.” I pray we, as a nation, will value and protect God’s gift of this nation to us and for those generations to come.
    In Christ, Carol

  5. Marnie, I can understand where you are coming from, but as you know me, I can only support those who base their policies on the Bible. The opinions of others, no matter who they are, do not sway me. Love, Rosemary

  6. Rosemary,
I never thought I would start or end leading a Bible study for the gratitude that this day we are free to pray, to have Bibles, and to talk about these truths. It saddens me that I see a diminished view of the law, the Constitution, and respect for the office of all our leaders.
I am thankful for people who still long to study the Word. There could be a famine of it - Amos.
Our RBS followed Judges with Ruth. The women are enjoying seeing this little family as a microcosm of the Judges. The power of biblical discussion brings the only unity I see at this time.
Thank you for sharing. We will continue to pray for the salvation of our leaders and the removal of fear from the Church.

  7. Thank you, Vivian. You are right on. We must pray for salvation of our leaders and removal of fear from the church and REVIVAL in this country.

  8. Dear Marnie, Some time has past since the divisive national election of 2020.
Much has been revealed to us. I agree with Rosemary that our nation may be experiencing the judgment of God for our denial of Him and His Laws. Each of the said presidents may be part of that judgement. The fact that our nation doesn't seem to want a godly man to lead us, these are the ones we get. Keep praying. Keep trusting the one God Who never fails to to right. I praise Him in this mess.
